Melissa Holland: News

SAMW camp - August 27, 2008

I just came back from the best music camp (except for summersongs...). Summer Acoustic Music Week in New Hampshire.

I went here for very different reasons than I usually go to camp: to learn a little about how to play guitar (I teach it in school a little). I also intended to learn how to play my grandfather's 1925 Gibson tenor banjo (I actually think the strings on it were 50 years old!). But the banjo class was strictly for 5 string banjo and mine was a four-string.
Someone suggested taking the mandolin class, since the chords are similar.

I borrowed a "mando" as they call it, and took John Kirk's class for a week. It was the best, most fun class I ever took, fell in love with the instrument, learned 7 chords and five songs in one week. I bought one John and took it home. Maybe at some point I'll work up the nerve to even play it at a gig.

I had a great time taking clog dancing with John's wife, Trish Miller.

I also fell in love with the music of Brooks Williams
and Mary Flower. Check out their websites/music.

There are songwriting classes there also and fabulous people all the way around!

WBCR Interivew - March 20, 2008

We had such a great time doing Barbara and Graham Dean's radio show in Great Barrington. Such gracious, professional but laid-back hosts. Alan and I premiered several new, as yet unrecorded songs. Barbara and Graham discussed and focused on the 5th Anniversary of the Iraq War. A great station
doing great things.

Of course the best part was hanging out with them afterwards and the next morning. They have such a warm home!

Photos to come!
